ModernGear Shoes: Well-heeled for less
I've shared my plans to slowly grow my wardrobe, and I've written about my love of saving money on clothing. The two are not mutually exclusive, with the internet at my disposal.
Now, not only have I needed to invest in clothing, but also in footwear. I really can't wear heels anymore (if you know me you know about the old Arthitic ankles) and haven't been able to comfortably for years, so I have a collection of various comfy shoes (read: ugly) and flats that are not hideous. Or at least, they weren't when they were new. Because I wear flats regularly, they get...well...worn!
It doesn't help that I live with a chewer. I recently said goodbye to a favourite pair of little silver ballet flats, when Duane got to them and one is not so much a ballet flat as a slide now, with the heel completely eaten away. I liked them so much I decided to track them down again.
They were under $50 from a DSW store, and were by Me Too. They had a ruched toe and a slight, slight heel so they weren't like wearing house slippers. They didn't appeal to me in the beginning from a fashion standpoint, but were the most comfortable flats I have ever slipped on, so I decided to get them and hope the looks would grow on me.
They did, and luckily I found them again, but a half-size small in the silver. I slipped on the non-chewed one and decided they had stretched a little and I could go down half a size, so they're on their way. Here they are in dark blue, which I'll also get later as well.
If I find a shoe I can actually walk in, then believe-you-me, I am going to get them in all colours. Ya gotta work with what you've got, I say. And the prices are amazing at DSW - these are $49.95. While Zappos.com doesn't have this specific style, their other flats from Me Too are in the $70 range, and Amazon.com also has the line but they're more expensive here too.
I also decided to try these little sparklers but in gold, for $24.94:
Because I am pretty much stuck with flats, I like to have fun with them.
I was just finishing up my online transaction when I realized I should go and search for online coupon codes, and I found three to try...saving me on shipping costs and discounting the order an extra $15. (I'll add the link to where I found them on my coupon codes and sales page.)
Total order = $64.83.
There is a pair of similar shoes by Me Too with a ruched toe but a wrapped wedge heel, availabe at Nordstrom.com. and I think that next payday I am going to try these. Who knows, maybe I can wear a slight heel.
I'm looking forward to trying platforms and wedges this spring and summer, to wear with dresses and skirts. I'm eager to try out some strappy and clunky styles that I saw girls tromping along in last summer. What footwear trends from last year are you hoping to see again?

Success with saving on style!
I unfortunately don't have a new recipe for you today, until maybe later in the day or even tomorrow. I can't get the images from the camera, so I'll post it when I can get them. You're in for a real treat though, as ModernGearTV Husband is our guest cook! He made Vail Pasta last night.
Remember my splurge on ParkVogel final sale items? I got everything last week (it arrived much quicker than I thought it would - one check for PV). And it arrived FABULOUS!
First, the Ruffle top ($21.50 from $86). I got this in a natural colour, which is sort of a cross between cream and taupe. The flax gives it an interesting texture - I thought it might be itchy but the more...nubbly, I guess, feel is on the outside of the fabric. It is swingy and lightweight, and will be perfect over jeans and boots.
Next, the Sleeveless pleat top ($18.75 from $75).
I got this one in black, and I have already worn it a few times. It has a sort of keyhole enclosure, as there's a button and loop at the top of the collar. I have worn it with a black cami underneath as it is a lower V than I thought. SO soft and breezy, same flax fabric as the top above.
Next up, the Cropped cardi in white ($25.25 from $101). I am just amazed and so pleased at the quality of this clothing, because this isn't a $25 cardi!
It is very sweet, and in addition to the button at the top, there are hook-and-eye enclosures that run the length of the opening, so it can be worn like it is in the picture, or completely closed. I will have to be on stain alert when I wear it, but I just love it.
The Lace tank ($19.75 from $79) is so feminine that I just can't wait to wear it, but I'll choose my occasion carefully (like our second wedding anniversary, under a cardi). It rarely happens that something fits me like it was made just for me, but this tank is just perfect.
And the Twist strap mini ($26.50 from $106). Oh, I have saved the best for last. It also fits like it was made for me. It is of the most soft and delicate combed cotten tencel mix, is so flattering that I wish it was summer. The top is doubled so it could definitely be worn without a bra, but the skirt is so sheer that I'll either wear a strapless slip underneath or, more likely, wear it over jeans.
Absolutely GORGE! Gorge, gorge, gorge.
Having ordered, gotten the package quickly and been thrilled with its contents, I can wholeheartedly recommend ParkVogel to my readers. As a matter of fact, I might try to sneak in one or two more final sale items before they're gone, and save my pennies for a sweet treat from this line once in a while.
After Christmas is said and done, do you still need a winter coat or are you coveting some cost-effective cashmere?

Roots handbags are the shiz-nit. (Are the cool kids still saying that?) I have had a cross-over-the-chest bag like this one, but in black (and without the front zipper) for a few years now. My husband bought it for me in Banff for my birthday (he IS a good husband!) and it has been my go-to bag ever since.
There are other beginning of the year sales on, too. Mrs. Meyers Clean Day has a sale on discontinued pet items, for instance.

Wardrobe Re-Build
Operation Wardrobe Rebuild has begun in earnest. I am not sure if I will know when I am done, but...I am getting close! The nausea in the pit of my stomach over spending is only slightly allayed by the fact that I was given some money for Christmas and my recent birthday. It's hard, with gloom and doom economic news, and my part-time job, to dedicate money to something as seemingly frivolous as clothing. Yet, the struggle to look decent at work also weighs heavily on me. In any event, I need to rebuild my wardrobe, and I have started.
For our office Christmas party I decided to splurge on this beauty, the black Cubism jacket, from Anthropologie ($148).
I also bought a camisole that has a front like this, but with spaghetti straps, in nearly the same colour, a pale wispy pink:
I don't wear the two together because the jacket is so much more finished if it's kept closed. But I wear cardigans a lot, and this cami's ruffles are showcased really nicely with an old cashmere cardi I wear all the time.
Yesterday I hit the outlets. I bought brown chinos and jeans at J.Crew, as well as a pretty coral-coloured blouse.
I only got two pairs of pants for a few reasons - the major one of which is I hope to be down at least a size in the first month of the year, so I don't want to stock up on sizes I hopefully won't be able to wear.
At Banana Republic's 50% off sale I stocked up on work blouses - a white and a black three-quarter sleeve button-up. Another white blouse with a ruffled placket, and a merino-cashmere mix grey turtleneck sweater with a kind of bib yoke. Very feminine, very pretty.
AND I just hit up the ParkVogel final sale. Here are my goodies:

The twist strap mini was an item I had been coveting for some time, since I saw it earlier this summer. Which brings me back to my old message and method of patience, patience, patience. I no longer make purchases on a whim.
I would likely have bought more ParkVogel - their cotton is so lightweight and beautiful, but they were out of a lot in my size, and with only one photo to see and FINAL SALE written everywhere, with no returns or exchanges possible, I decided that was enough.
Despite the great prices, I do still feel shopping guilt but...I'll get over it.

I get a bit nervous ordering things on line - remember my pretty blue ruffle top from J.Crew? Too big! So I'll mail it back today and hope there's an XS. with ParkVogel, if things don't fit I'll have to sell them at a consignment shop or give them to my sister (I know what you're hoping, Tanya!) but I still think it's worth the savings opportunity.
I definitely have a very feminine, ruffled, delicate thing going on here...can't wait til I can put it all together.
Next up - I need to get some shoes and boots.
PS I popped into Banana on Sunday afternoon when drawn in by their SALE SALE SALE signs, and came home with a grey sort of boyfriend-cardi. Kind of a longer one like this one...for about $35.

ModernGear Women: Saving on Style in tight times
I don't have a shopping spree every season - I can't justify a regular spending session, but I have also come to the realization that my wardrobe is in a bit of a sorry state. This wouldn't be as big a problem for me if I didn't recently get a job as a magazine editor, where I have to dress up a bit more for interviews and editorial meetings . Sadly, my wardrobe of office attire like great quality suits is a good ten years old, and two sizes too small. Because, you know, life happens.
And so, this is the start of what I am calling Operation Wardrobe Rebuild. You probably already know about my great handbag purchase. That's the great kick-off to this operation...but I have a feeling it's going to be a slow and steady marathon, rather than a sprint, to re-fill my closet. I am working just part-time, and it just doesn't feel like it's the safest time to be spending money without a lot of thought and examination of "want versus need" first.
Waiting paid off for me with respect to a J. Crew top I'd been coveting. It was $45, and then it went on sale for $19.99. I found a free shipping code at PromotionCode.org, and this little beauty cost me a grand total of $21.64. Whoo!
I would take a picture of me in it, but I'm trying to post this before I jump in the shower and start my day so you don't want to see that!
Now, I really do need to accomplish my goal of rebuilding my wardrobe of staples and by that I mean things like: white blouse, black blouse, white tee, black tee, grey tee, black suit, etc. but I am going to try to do it in a controlled, sensible way as well so that I can save wherever possible.
Here are a few ways to do that.
1. Hit the outlets. I need staples like a black v-neck sweater, white cotton blouse, and dark jeans, and outlet stores are the perfect place to find great labels like Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Cole Haan and more, at reduced prices. If I check out the outlet's web site before I go, I might even be able to find out about other saving opportunities. If you register online at Chelsea Premium Outlets and join the VIP Club, you can download printable coupons and get e-mail announcements on sales and special events. Check out this list of brands you can find at these outlets. I'd shop for wardrobe anchor pieces here any day.
2. Stalk ebay and craigslist. If you know what item and size you are looking for, you might be able to find it through these online auction and sales sites and others. Approach this task with patience and perserverance, and your efforts might just pay off in savings.
3. Shop online. I do this for two reasons. One, often times web sites that do not have bricks-and-mortar overhard to pay can lower their prices and are quicker to decide and announce limited time savings opportunities. Two, if I have perused their whole stock and decided on what I want, chances are I won't be swayed to consider something else (that I am bound to add on at the cash register, rather than replace what I was going to buy in the first place). It's akin to marching into a store with blinders on and a laser focus, versus browsing. I am more likely to get in trouble when I am browsing, and right now I need to focus my few wardrobe dollars on those items that I have already thought about and decided on, not a spur-of-the-moment choice. Make sure to sign up for your favourite online boutique's newsletter, so that you'll get news of upcoming sales, and be sure to visit back often to check for new items and sales.

5. Don't be too proud to hit stores you might not choose first if you were absolutely rolling in cash. I've said it before, I'll say it again. If you don't mind buying a piece you think you'll wear for just one season or two, why spend a ton on it? I just got this cute sweater from Target last week:

Would I have preferred a sweater from Vince? Of course. But even on sale, as most of their sweaters are now, they're still $100 more. I am tempted, with that sale, and would maybe invest in a more classic cardigan that I'll wear again and again...while this sort of kimono-inspired cowl neck sweater I might not be crazy about in winters to come.
I'll conclude my wordy post of the day but saying that I, like so many other women, really struggle to express my fashion personality. Often it's not a matter of a lack of bravery to wear what I want to wear, but of budget to be able to afford what I would like to dress in.
But so what. Times are tough. The word recessionista is starting to be used in style articles. The economy makes it so the next word might be depressionista...a news headline from today says that employers cut 533,000 jobs in November alone, the most in 34 years. So I need a few pieces to replenish my wardrobe, but if that's all I have to worry about, then I'm one of the lucky ones.

I'll conclude my wordy post of the day but saying that I, like so many other women, really struggle to express my fashion personality. Often it's not a matter of a lack of bravery to wear what I want to wear, but of budget to be able to afford what I would like to dress in.
But so what. Times are tough. The word recessionista is starting to be used in style articles. The economy makes it so the next word might be depressionista...a news headline from today says that employers cut 533,000 jobs in November alone, the most in 34 years. So I need a few pieces to replenish my wardrobe, but if that's all I have to worry about, then I'm one of the lucky ones.

Moderngear Women: SOS = Saving on Style!
I raved last week about the fact that I don't think you need to spend a lot to look good, and I'm happy to offer more proof to back up this assertion. First of all, I just got the two dresses I had admired earlier in the summer but waited until they were on sale much later to order, and they are fantastic. The denim dress from Delia's is a heavier and better quality denim than I really expected, and I can see myself wearing it over the fall and winter frequently (especially after moving back to Vancouver when I'll need a little more warmth). Properly accessorized, it's going to be stylish and very comfy.
The shirtdress from Garnet Hill is lighter and longer than I expected (though I ought not be surprised about the length - I am 5'2" and the model probably at least 5'7"!), and really simple and beautiful.
And so, heady from the success of my sale purchases, I am also ready to 'fess up that I ordered something from Forever 21 that knocked my socks off. Why "'fess up"?
Well, I'll start off by saying though I might look 21, I'm nowhere near that age, and I don't think I should dress as such. And, I've been in a Forever 21 store just once in my life and was disappointed with the quality of the items...cheap fabric, poorly sewn, would fall apart after one wash, sort of complaints.
So imagine my surprise when decided to take a chance and order something that looked good on their web site: this little beauty, the Caylin Sheer Silk Top, for $29.80.
I was more than pleasantly surprised when I received it in teal - I was downright ecstatic. I did feel a bit silly that I hadn't bothered to look at the back and just assumed it was solid and that I'd be able to wear a bra with it, but the back actually looks like this:
so it's pretty much a cami or strapless bra style, but I don't mind that at all. So, I ordered it in the other colour, magenta!
Now, this top wasn't on sale, but it was a very reasonable $29.80 and looks like it cost more than that. And so here are a few lessons I can share when taking a chance on a purchase from a store you're just not sure about. One: I don't think you can go wrong with 100% silk. Two, to me, ruffles are classic and can be dressed up or down...so even if the over-all look of the top didn't work for me, and maybe isn't appropriate for an office job (i.e. the sheer in the back), I'd still have kept it because it would be great with a jacket/skirt combo to spice up your plain black suit, great with a cardi and jeans, or lovely with a short/swingy jacket that is going to feature prominently in the fall as a topper. So my chance paid off.
When I ordered the pink one I thought I'd try a few more pieces, so I also ordered the really pretty Deco Cotton Top for $22.80:
and the Meghan Satin Top for $19.80:
In the end, the Meghan top didn't work - just too big and ill-fitting on me, so I sent it back and there was a credit on my card very quickly.
I'm very impressed with Forever 21 - I learned that cheaper doesn't necessarily look cheap, and I will absolutely order again. I would definitely counsel people to take a chance on a place they are not completely familiar with, as long as they are well-established and you can return things your money back, of course. It might turn out really well and if not, you can always say you tried. Isn't that what fashion is all about, anyway?
