ModernGear Women: summer scarves for hot weather

When it's hot hot hot outside, the last thing you want to do is wrap something around your neck - but for some reason this summer, that's what famous fashion lovers and their not-as-famous counterparts (aka the girl on the street) have been doing, and fashion bloggers have been writing about.

Rachel Bilson

Lindsay Lohan and Melanie Brown

Cameron Diaz

Nicky Hilton

Lauren Conrad
Kim Kardashian

I
was a little late to buy in to this trend - it's my first summer in So. Cal from Vancouver, BC and I spend so much time feeling like I am melting that the last thing I have wanted to do was add on another layer...until I tried it. And what do you know, those pretty gauzy scarves are more than just cool-looking...they're cool feeling, too.

Sure, it's counter-intuitive to add a scarf to any outfit in the summer, but with a plain t-shirt and shorts combo or even a summer dress...tied in any number of ways or even just worn loose around the neck, a lightweight linen or cotton is a lovely addition.

Particularly popular this summer are brightly coloured filmy scarves, especially the Love Quotes Italian linen collection, with an inspirational quote accompanying each scarf. Here are my favourite tones:

Tobi also has a wide range of colours priced at $85 with great names like Garden, Papaya, Lime Ice, Melon Ice, Morning Glory, Cherry Pie, Fog, and more. Fall tones like Jeep and Cobalt will help to carry these into the next season.

I decided to dip my toe into this trend with a less expensive summer scarf from my neighbourhood Gap ($19.50), seen below on cupcake tasting day.

They don't seem to have this nice red available online in their solid wrap scarves for $19.50; colours currently available online are light chartreuse:
and beetroot (burgundy), brown earth, ibiza sea (blue) and true black. I also like their Itarsia dot scarf, also for $19.50, available in new off white, or antique pink.
So, though it may seem counter-intuitive, you've still got some hot weather to try out this cool trend. Go ahead, tie one on!

Lovely, non?

I think so...I would try Holt's, maybe even Aritzia, try that cool shop in the the Park Royal village in West Van (forgetting the name), maybe even Jonathan + Olivia on Main. Or Lark on Main. You never know, might find one.

Oh! Or FAB, try them too. And Plenty.

I could go on for days! Let me know what you find?

Ok ... I was so inspired I bought one!! I got a basic black cotton crinkle one at Old Navy and I love it. Now I just have to figure out how to wear it. I'm going to try tonight!

Thanks for the inspiration!

I'll let you know how it went.

Kathryn, did you buy one? Or two? Tanya, nice to hear, and you said Nerida got one as well, right? I ought to make a commission on these ideas!
