People, behold an image:
It's a festive one, meant to evoke warm feelings and memories of family celebrations...but I ask one question - what person who loves their family would serve them THIS?!
This is MEANT to be cranberry sauce, but this IS NOT cranberry sauce!! This is canned cranberry jelled sauce, cut into lovely slices to look oh-so-festive.
Please. Do NOT do this to your family this Christmas. It borders on criminal, especially when there's the utterly amazing yet simple recipe that follows.
It's from my sister Tanya (the Marthica from the title, named after Martha Stewart and Monica from Friends...), and I think she might have gotten it directly from Martha, but whatever. It's amazing.
There are no photos, because I made it at Thanksgiving when I was in a complete rush and forgot, but trust me when I say it's easy-peasy and you can make it without the visual reference. Just do it.
Cranberry Sauce
Ingredients
2 cups fresh cranberries
juice and chopped zest of 1 orange
1/2 cup port
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp cornstarch
Directions
1. In a small saucepan, combine cranberries, orange juice & zest, port, sugar and cinnamon. 2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmering & cook until cranberries are tender, stirring occasionally.
3. In a small cup make a slurry with cornstarch & 1 tbsp water.
4. Whisk cornstarch mixture into cranberry sauce and cook, whisking, until sauce thickens. Add more sugar if necessary.
And, don't forget to serve the rest of the port after dinner!
Bon appetit, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
