There was a rite of passage with the four kids in my family - when we reached the age of 16, we got a leather jacket. I'm not sure how this started, though I'd assume with my brother, the eldest child, but it was carried on through to my two sisters and then me.
I chose a black biker jacket with a lot of zippers - I wish I still had it. Leather jackets with a good cut never really go out of style, but they're in style like never before this fall. Here is some celebrity inspiration (click photo to make larger).
Clockwise from top left:
Sarah Larson, Ashley Olsen, Bar Rafaeli, Nicole Richie, Lauren Conrad, Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Nicole Richie, Julia Restoin Roitfeld.
As far as leather jackets go, I am definitely more drawn to brown and black for fall, but I have always had a hankering for a camel-coloured one as well. Considering the prices of the ones I was able to find, I think I'll have to do with just pictures for now...but they're good inspiration nonetheless. And who knows...maybe Mom kept my old biker jacket? I can always hope...

I almost forgot that I used to be so in love with my leather jackets! Living in Santa Barbara now, I would never be able to wear it.
Not even at night, Lisa? In Long Beach it's finally cooling down enough for that...but I still can't justify the $!
Oooh! I think you had a nice tradition going on in your place. I have only had ONE leather jacket, and I got it in the 80's. I got rid of it.
But, now I think I really LOVE that ruffled jacket! Wow!
Cathy! I did like that tradition! As the youngest I waited with real anticipation to turn 16, and I remember my Mom taking me shopping for the jacket. I believe we bought it at West Edmonton Mall!! Oh the good old days.
I love all of the ones I found...hard to choose. But, the Mackage one with a bit longer coverage might just be the one. I dunno. Too hard to choose!
The ruffled one would definitely look hot on you.
I don't know what happened to your biker jacket. Could we have given it to one of your nieces? Remember how I wanted you to buy a more classic jacket than the biker one you chose? Do you still have the leather jacket I sewed for you? Is it still wearable?
Mom
Hi Mom!!
I feel like I got rid of it before the nieces would have been big enough to wear it.
I don't actually remember you wanting me to get a more classic one, no! Clearly I argued and prevailed...hope there was no foot stomping involved. I don't think I was the foot stomping type though!
I still have the jacket but it's...too classic!! It's like a suit jacket. I want biker chic. And the fashion dilemma rages on.
Love you!
Leather jackets, nice round up. Wish I could afford to get like, 10 of these!
C.
